Mabel stayed with Cyrus, because between the four of us, we decided that a backup plan was an awesome idea. Relying on a librarian’s literary research into children’s detective novels for a possible solution might—just possibly—be a bit of a stretch.

There was also the question of whether or not our hypothetical preteen, part-FG, part-witch budding criminal truly wanted to be caught. I could have been completely wrong about that.

As a result, Mabel and Cyrus were tasked with creating a tracking spell.

Yes, they’d already tried one.

Yes, it had failed.

But now that at least four witches knew that the missing artifact was in fact an FG’s wand—a pivotal piece of information previously withheld—we put our heads together and came up with a tweak to the previous tracking spell.

We also had one very significant component to a successful tracking spell that the previous attempt had lacked: four screws that had been magicked by our wand-stealer.

On top of that, I was a potions expert. Prepared magic was my jam. So I gave them a few tips to supercharge the tracking spell with a complementary potion…even though I hadn’t a clue what the heck an FG was about twenty minutes previous.

Whatever. I didn’t need to understand FG magic to know it was in some way different from our own. Example A, a wand that both converted holiday cheer to raw magic and then stored it for later use.

Best practices were still useful, and the best practice in this instance was to look for that which was distinguishable from the rest. In other words, find the magic that stood apart. One of these magicks is not like the rest. And conveniently, that applied to both the artifact and the person who’d stolen it.

If we were right and it was one of Carolyn’s descendants who’d taken the wand.

Either way, my grandfather and Mabel had the screws, and those should—theoretically—allow them to create a link to the person who’d left them behind still impregnated with their own personal magical calling card.

I finished notating the potion recipe I’d just written out and handed it to Mable. She was much more likely to be precise when it came to following it.

She read the sheet of paper, raised her eyebrows, and then tilted it so that my grandfather could read it over her shoulder. “Very nice. I wouldn’t have thought to use quite this mix.”

“Well, it can be potentially explosive.” I grinned when my grandpa’s eyes widened. “Be sure to follow the instructions exactly. Too many claw trimmings or too little down fluff and you’ll have a mess.”

But they should already know that. Mixing air and fire via magical potion ingredients wasn’t like dealing with the elements themselves, but there could still be explosive repercussions.

“I’ll have to call Agnes,” Mabel said, “and see if she can trim Abe’s nails. This is a lot of lizard claw trimmings, more than we have on hand. And magical lizard or no, I’m not sure Abe’s grow all that fast. We’ll see.”

I pointed to the page where I’d made a notation.
